Language

I received a tear-off Japanese calendar as a gift. Aside from horological symbols and other arcana, each day has a short saying at the bottom. I've started translating these as reading practice.

I haven't studied Japanese long and some of them are quite obtuse - corrections are welcome.

Those who know do not say, those who say do not know.

*shitashiki naka ni mo reigi ari*

Good manners between good friends.

沈む瀬あれば浮かぶ瀬あり

*shizumu se areba ukabu se ari*

If there's downs, there's ups.

*How to translate this more literally... it's about sinking waters and floating waters?*

石の上にも三年

*ishi no ue ni mo san nen*

Three years on top of a stone

*...will warm it up*

Anger appears as an enemy.

*I don't understand the meaning of と in this sentence.*

Better to be the mouth of a chicken than the arse of a cow.

Asking a question is embarrassing for a moment, not asking is embarrassing forever.

Don't chase after people.

Getting up and working - lucky person.

学問に近道なし

*gakumon ni chikamichi nashi*

There are no shortcuts to learning.

水は逆さまに流れず

*mizu wa sakasama ni nagarezu*

Water doesn't flow up.

明日の事を言えば鬼が笑う

*asu no koto o ieba oni ga warau*

Speaking of what will happen tomorrow makes devils laugh.

赤子は泣き泣き育つ

*akago wa naki naki sodatsu*

Babies grow up crying.

朱に交われば赤くなる

*shu ni majiwareba akakunaru*

If you mess with crimson, you get red. :D

*sannin yoreba monju no chie*

When three people gather, the wisdom of Manjushri.

Flowers to their roots, birds back to their nests.

The journey of a thousand miles starts with one step?

A little stream becomes a big river.

*kusa o nukazareba ki shigerazu*

If you don't pull out grass, trees won't grow.

*horeta yamai ni kusuri nashi*

There is no cure for love sickness.

Those chasing deer don't look at the mountains.

Shortcuts are longcuts.

Neighbouring flowers are red.

If you can't tie knots, tie lots.

彼も人なり、我も人なり

*kare mo hito nari, ware mo hito nari*

They're a person, I'm a person too.

*Think なり here is Xrather than etymology 3. meaning is. And the meaning of this proverb is that - if they can do it, I can too.*

鉄は熱いうちに打て

*tetsu wa netsui uchi ni ute*

Strike iron in a warm house.

2月20日

考いては子に従え

*o ite wa ko ni shitagae*

When you are old, be guided by your children.

驕れる者久しからず

*ogoreru mono hisa shikarazu*

Proud person, long time with out?

*No idea.*

2月22日

猫を追うより魚をのけよ

*neko o ou yori sakana o noke yo*

Put the fish away instead of chasing away cats.

人と塀風はすぐには立たず

*hito to heifuu wa suguni wa tatazu*

People and folding screens don't stand up straight away.

人と以て鏡となす

*hito to motte kagami to nasu*

蹴る馬も乗り手次第

*keru uma mo norite jidai*

It depends on the rider whether a horse kicks or not.

牡羊と羊は頭突きをする

*ohitsuji to hitsuji wa zutsuki o suru*

Ram and sheep butt heads.

言いたいことは明日言え

*iitai koto wa ashita ie*

Think before you speak.

*ki o mite mori o mizu*

Can't see the forest for the trees.

明日は明日の風が吹く

*ashita wa ashita no kaze ga fuku*

Tomorrow, tomorrow's winds blow.

Become anew every day.

迷わね者に悟りなし

*mayo wane mono ni satori nashi*

No enlightenment for those who are lost.

思えば思わるる

*omoeba omowaruru*

if you think, think through and through?

*ba means 'if' X were the case?*

3月3日

その子を知らざれば、その友を視よ

*sono ko o shirazareba, sono tomo o shi yo*

If you don't know the child, look who their friends are.

*sono in this context can mean 'the', rather than that?*

3月4日

海のことは漁師問え

*umi no koto wa ryoushi ni toe*

Ask fisherman about the sea.
